Following his viva last Wednesday, December 4, the assessors of Gurkirt Singh’s PhD thesis, Prof Dr Andrea Vedaldi (Oxford University) and Dr Fridolin Wild (Director PAL) concluded that they recommend he be awarded the degree ‘Doctor of Philosophy’. Gurkirt’s thesis is entitled ‘Online Spatiotemporal Action Detection and Prediction via Causal Representations’ and it addresses the problem of detecting and recognising human actions from video material. The thesis develops novel approaches for deep learning for the spatiotemporal detection of action tubes, including online and in realtime, and including causal prediction. Gurkirt was supervised by Fabio Cuzzolin (Director Visual AI lab) and Nigel Crook (Head of the Cognitive Robotics Research Group and Associate Dean of the faculty).
