The UK nominated Prof Dr Fridolin Wild as convenor of a key standards working group, WG 11, for future-proofing AR/VR in a joint technical committee of the International Standards Organisation (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Dr Wild’s appointment as convenor of Working Group 11 comes with the remit to focus on health, safety, security, and usability / user experience for Augmented & Virtual Reality (AR/VR). The working group contributes as one of seven to SC24’s wider scope on computer graphics, image processing, and environmental data representation.

ISO standards help meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with the standards developed and planned in this working group addressing in particular SDG 4, 9, and 11.

Economic, environmental and societal dimensions are all directly addressed by ISO standards. Organizations and companies looking to contribute to the SDGs will find that International Standards provide effective tools to help them rise to the challenge.

International Standards Organisation

Reliable standards that shift the goal posts for innovative practice in the area of AR/VR are much needed and with the first two work items on safe use and cleanliness/PPE, the working group is off to an excellent start.
